Poetry and photography—art forms that seize creative minds, inspiring them to steal moments of beauty from nature’s bounty. A telling of stories, perspectives through rapturous pictures and mellifluous words. Both crafts are brought alive through an individual’s—an artist’s—unique approach.

Photography and poetry go well together. One medium captures a visual representation while the other conveys a poetic image. It is a powerful synergy. I am enamored by the warm unfolding of a new sunrise, the subtle or deliberate visitation of a frigid winter, the melodic exchange of birds across lakes, skyscrapers,  the caresses of brown-orange hues in Autumn or Spring, or the strong message portrayed in a building’s archetecture. I try to capture their glory with my lenses and then convey the emotions evoked on paper.

These two awakening arts envelope beauty for the viewer through their unique approach of stanzas and palettes. My goal has always been to meld these two and create a splendid unison for the audience to appreciate, as much as the first imprints have influenced my muse and driven my creativity’s flow. Most poets write the verse and leave the impact to the imagination of the reader. That is well and good, but each poem has meaning behind it. The approach I use is unique for a poetry book. I provide insight into the purpose behind the poem then define the method and technique used within it and even date the photo (often with other detail).

Poems have structure and technique—rhyme schemes (or none), meter (iambic, free verse, trochee, anapestic, etc.), stanza length, and line length. There are examples in my books at the intro, the poem itself, and from a glossary.

One can paint or write to their heart’s content of nature’s simplicities, a building’s magnificence, or a friend’s unsuspected manners or quirks. Everything can be captured and relived. Each artist can have their own unique presentation, but few define the forms as I do. For most, it will take time and practice to rouse the art through several drafts; some wing it, able to seize the portrait at a precise moment and reveal it instantly for the world to grasp its wonder. Seizing the right subject is important. It takes a skilled eye and writer’s sensitivitry. As a craftsman of poetry and photography, I have a God-given knack for this, and like any artist, every piece any craftsman presents is one that ignites.
